Episode 396: She’s The Man Deep Dive

March 31, 2021

In this episode, to celebrate the birthday of our senior creative Erin Moon, we deep dive one of her favorite teen rom coms of the aughts: 2006’s She’s The Man. Amanda stans and optimists unite as we discuss this Amanda Bynes vehicle including which famous comedians she was primed to take the torch from to who stole her lunch money when things went south. Plus we discuss bad wigs, Paul Blart, and the believability of Channing Tatum playing a high schooler at age 26.

MENTIONS

  • Do you like us? Sign up for our monthly newsletter Note for the Audio so you can prove your affection: knoxandjamie.com/newsletter
  • IMDb: She’s the Man (March 2006), starring Amanda Bynes | Stream on Hulu or rent on Amazon.
  • Fun fact: Just like 1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You is a retelling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, She’s the Man is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
  • Callback: Episode 393- Snake Draft: The Spring
  • Hat tip to Erin’s latest: Faith Adjacent: The Enneagram
  • Close call: Erin almost chose Mrs. Winterbourne, “the Brendan Fraser masterpiece” for this very special birthday episode.
  • Into this? We break down movies all the time on Patreon. The BFOTS get Cinema Sidepiece (last features: Clueless, Pelican Brief, You’ve Got Mail) and the Bible Binge Seminarians get Sacred Cinema, currently covering the Harry Potter Films.
  • This is not a drill! Black Widow is (finally!) coming to Disney+ (Premier Access) and select theatres July 9.
  • Fact check: (A) Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 was edited to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, (B) There’s a Paul Blart easter egg in Judas and the Black Messiah.
  • Peep the credits of screenwriter Karen McCullah!
  • IMDb: the Channing Tatum slow ramp-up
  • Classic Amanda Bynes: All That funniest moments | The Amanda Show pilot
  • Sadness warning: What happened to Amanda Bynes?
  • Youtube documentary: Demi Lovato’s Dancing With the Devil
  • Spotify: She’s the Man (Music from the Motion Picture)
  • Notable scenes: Tobias (David Cross) as the soccer coach | debutante luncheon | pizza parlor | shower scene
  • Fact check: Kim Jong-un age vs. Channing Tatum age
  • Consider: could Matt Smith have played Channing Tatum’s character?
  • Knox’s newest book: All Things Reconsidered
